Layers that require authorisation (such as PostgreSQL) now work in the Mergin Maps mobile app. The updated Mergin Maps QGIS Plugin automatically syncs credentials, so no manual setup is needed.

Mock position source detection

The GNSS data panel now shows when position data is coming from a mock provider. This works on both Android and iOS.

Orthometric heights for built-in GNSS

The mobile app now reports orthometric (MSL) heights when using the device's built-in GNSS on Android and iOS.

Android – heights use the EGM96 geoid
iOS – heights use the system geoid (typically EGM2008)

This does not apply when using an external GNSS receiver.

Last sign-in time now visible for workspace members

Multi-feature deletion is now available

Autosync upgrade

Sync is now triggered automatically when you open a project and then every minute. Offline work is smoother, with no error dialogs shown when the network is unavailable. You can enable autosync in the mobile app settings page.

Early Access: Share Maps via URL

We’re excited to announce that the Share Maps via URL feature is now available in early access!

What’s new:

Generate a unique link to your map. Only people with the link can access your map.
Links provide view-only access, so recipients can explore the map without making edits, no Mergin Maps account required.

To try it out, simply fill out the access request form. For a quick overview, check out our blog post with screenshots and instructions.

Introducing photo sketching (preview)

You can now draw quick, informal sketches directly on your photos in the Mergin Maps mobile app. Whether you capture a new photo or pick one from your gallery, it’s an easy way to highlight details, mark observations, or add notes right on the image.

The feature is currently in preview — enable it in your QGIS project properties to give it a try.

Layers list can now follow QGIS order

You can now order layers based on the QGIS layer tree order. This is enabled by default for new projects. For existing projects, you can turn it on in the project settings in QGIS.

You can now draw quick, informal sketches directly on the map in the Mergin Maps mobile app. It’s a handy way to capture ideas, mark locations, or add notes while in the field. Sketches are stored in a separate layer, so they won’t interfere with your main data.

Multi-feature editing is here

You can now edit multiple features (map objects) at once. After identifying a feature, tap “Select multiple” to start selecting others from the same layer. You’ll then be able to update their data in one go. The multi-edit form supports all common widgets, except photos and relations.

Support for online images in attachment widget

You can now share identified map features (objects) with a simple link! Just open your project’s map, identify the feature(s), and click “Copy link.”

Pro tip: You can also share features by copying and pasting the URL directly.

Redesigned admin panel with improved usability

The admin panel has been redesigned to better align with our design guidelines and provide a clearer overview of your server usage. Key improvements include:

Set storage and contributor limits per workspace

Dynamic control of field read-only state

You can now make a field read-only dynamically using QGIS expressions! This feature is available in QGIS 3.30 and newer. To set it up, go to Layer Properties → Attributes Form, select a field, and change the editable flag to an expression that returns true or false. This allows you to control when a field is locked for editing based on your data or conditions.

Readers can no longer edit projects locally

Users with the Reader role can no longer make changes to a project in the mobile app. They will not be able to create new features, update existing ones, or delete data. Previously, readers could make edits locally, but the app prevented them from synchronising changes to the server. This update ensures a more consistent read-only experience.

Support for dynamic field names (aliases)

The latest version of the mobile app now supports field aliases with dynamic expressions! You can set this up in QGIS by going to Layer Properties → Attributes Form, selecting a field and clicking the icon next to the alias input. From the context menu, choose Edit to define your expression. This allows field names to change dynamically based on your data.

Measurement tool is now available in the app

We’ve added measurement tools to Mergin Maps, allowing you to measure both distance and area directly within the app. The new "Measure" action is accessible from the "more" menu, where you can easily add points to calculate lengths and areas in your projects. The process is similar to creating a line feature, with a live display of the measured distance and options to undo, add points, or complete the measurement. Measurements are following your QGIS distance and area project units.

Feature identification in Maps [Beta]

Layer feature lists now follow QGIS sorting rules

The app now respects QGIS sorting rules when listing features from a specific layer. Navigate to “Layers -> select a layer”, and the feature list will follow the sorting set in QGIS. Sorting can be set in QGIS by clicking a column to toggle between ascending or descending order, or set a custom sort expression through the popup menu. The sorting order is saved in the QGIS project file and will be automatically applied in the app.

Order entries in value relation widget

We’ve added support for ordering entries by value in value relation widgets. To enable this feature, simply check the option in the QGIS layer’s attribute form configuration. Once selected, the list will automatically be sorted by value. See the screenshot below for details.

🔏 New Editor permission: safe and secure project collaboration

We are introducing a new type of workspace role and project permission called "Editor". Editors in your workspace will be able to work on your projects without the risk of breaking your GeoPackage layers and QGIS project files.

How does it work?

✅ Editors can:

Add, update, and delete features in your projects
Use the mobile app and the QGIS plugin
Add new files, except for QGIS project files
Edit files, except for QGIS project files and GeoPackages (without changing the layer schema)
Remove files, except for QGIS project files and GeoPackages

⛔️ Editors cannot:

Manipulate QGIS project files, including changing symbology, adding/removing layers, or updating forms. Any changes to a QGIS project file will not be synchronized and will be overridden if the server version of the QGIS project file changes.
Remove GeoPackages
Make changes in GeoPackages that would result in creating conflicted copies, such as adding new columns or layers

Who is this new permission type suitable for?

This permission type is ideal for surveyors and others who need to add data without manipulating layer schemas and QGIS project settings.

Open PDF and other packaged files from within the form

PDF and other files can now be opened from within the feature form. Use an HTML link with the address project:// to open packaged files! HTML links can be placed inside an HTML widget or a multiline text editor.

Change view mode for relations from gallery to text

If you prefer using text mode for relations instead of the gallery mode, add “nogallery“ text to your relation editor title. The mobile app will then display text mode instead of gallery. The fix is now released in 2024.1.0.

Identify multiple features on map

Ability to set custom name for photos taken in Mergin Maps mobile

Mergin Maps QGIS plugin is now capable of setting a custom QGIS expression that will be used as a name for the photos taken in the Mergin Maps mobile app. It is possible to combine field values, variables (even Mergin Maps variables) and other QGIS expression elements to create your custom photo name format (subfolders supported). You can find this configuration in the QGIS project settings > Mergin Maps.

Available since Mergin Maps QGIS plugin 2023.2 and Mergin Maps mobile 2.2
